If you’re beginning the search for a senior living community—whether for yourself or for a parent—it’s normal to feel a mix of anticipation, hope, and maybe even uncertainty. A senior living community tour is one of the most important steps you can take in making a confident and informed decision.

At The Tradition, we welcome hundreds of families every year who are navigating this transition. Whether you’re an adult child seeking the best environment for your mom or you’re looking for a lifestyle that offers more freedom and connection, asking the right questions on your tour makes all the difference.

Below are the top questions we recommend asking—along with why they matter and what to look for in response.

  1. What levels of care do you offer, and how do they adjust over time?

Why ask: Understanding whether a community offers Independent Living, Assisted Living, or Memory Care—and how easily residents can transition between them—gives a sense of ease as most are looking for this to be just one move.

What to look for: A clear explanation of each level of care and how transitions are managed. Ask whether you or your loved one can remain in the same apartment or if a move would be required should care needs change.  Also, suggest asking how the community handles a situation where one spouse might need more care than the other.

  1. What is included in the monthly fee?

Why ask: Senior living costs can vary significantly. Knowing what’s covered helps you compare apples to apples—and avoid hidden fees.

What to look for: A breakdown of what’s included (meals, housekeeping, transportation, activities, etc.) and what comes at an additional cost. Be sure to ask about yearly rate increases as well.  It is also advised to find out if the community is strictly rental or requires a large entrance fee.  At The Tradition, there is no large buy-in fee to join the community.

  1. What does a typical day look like for residents?

Why ask: This question helps you or your loved one imagine life in the community—and whether it aligns with your interests and energy level.

What to look for: A daily calendar with variety, including physical activity, social events, and quiet time. Notice whether staff speak warmly about how residents engage, not just what’s scheduled.

  1. How does the dining program work?

Why ask: Mealtime is often a highlight of the day. It’s not just about the food—it’s about connection and consistency.

What to look for: Multiple dining options, flexibility, and menu choices that reflect both nutritional and personal preferences. If you can, ask to sit in or sample a meal.  Many times lunch is offered on the tour to get a feel for what a day-in-the-life is really like.

  1. How do new residents adjust and get connected?

Why ask: The emotional transition is just as important as the physical move. You want to know that your loved one—or you—won’t feel isolated or overwhelmed.

What to look for: Programs designed to welcome and integrate new residents, such as buddy systems, welcome events, or life-enrichment staff who personally check in.

  1. What sets this community apart from others?

Why ask: This open-ended question gives insight into the heart of the community—its values, priorities, and personality.

What to look for: Listen for answers that reflect genuine care, resident satisfaction, and a strong sense of purpose. Do they mention the longevity of staff? Resident-led programs? Family involvement?

Final Thoughts

Choosing a senior living community is about more than floorplans or meal plans—it’s about choosing a lifestyle that supports well-being, dignity, and a place where life is lived.

If you’re touring a senior living community soon, go in with your questions ready. Observe the small things, too—how residents interact, whether the team knows names, if the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming. These subtle cues often say the most.

And if you’re ready to tour The Tradition, we’d love to meet you. Our team is here to walk you through every detail—because we know this decision isn’t just practical. It’s deeply personal.
