At The Tradition, our Community motivates and inspires residents to be better every day. We want our Community to grow and thrive, but at the end of the day, we want what is best for the individual and his or her family. In an effort to help guide your decision-making process, let’s talk about the difference between Assisted Living and in-home care.

Both Assisted Living and in-home care involve a person’s receiving assistance from trained professionals regarding activities of daily living. These activities or tasks can include light cleaning and laundry, assistance with bathing and dressing, and medication management, depending on what is needed. Assisted Living is experienced within a multi-unit, Community setting, such as that found at Tradition Senior Living.  In-home care occurs when a professional comes to your loved one’s home (where he or she may live alone or share living space with other family members) to deliver care.

There are many factors to consider when deciding between Assisted Living and in-home care. These include the specific physical and mental needs and capabilities of the senior receiving care, the living situation the in-home care professional would be visiting, the costs and budgeting for each, the need for 24-hour support versus scheduled care, services needed versus those offered, and finding the right fit when it comes to in-home care personnel.

Many people prefer to stay in their own home for as long as possible while they age for reasons of privacy and independence. Others, especially if their personality tends to be more socially-minded, desire to be in a Community of people with similar interests.  Per the National Institute on Aging, “Positive indicators of social well-being may be associated with lower levels of Interlukin-6 in otherwise healthy people.  Interlukin-6 is an inflammatory factor implicated in age-related disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and some forms of cancer.”

Assisted Living Communities allow their residents to develop their own routines and schedules, but in a way that keeps them safe and active while sharing common areas with others. The care is available 24/7 but can range from as-needed to full medical care. That range is consistent with in-home care as well, but that service is more of an add-on, hourly service without the support of a Community or shared space. Ultimately, it’s up to the individual and their family to make that decision together.

Either way, we know the care of your loved one is priority Number One. Please give us a call should you want to talk about the services we provide, our unique Communities or if you have any questions at all. We’re here to help you make the right choice, even if it’s not with us.
